Ghost Flowers
#1 Bestselling Book
Overview
Ghost Flowers started as something private. Poetry written through grief, through loss, through a Sufi journey. It became a #1 Bestseller on Amazon Canada. No publisher, no publicist, no ad spend.
Designed end-to-end in InDesign, published under a self-founded Canadian imprint, distributed through IngramSpark to over 45,000 retailers, schools, and libraries, and launched with a 30-person digital street team from the existing readership.
Process
How It Happened
Written Through Grief
Ghost Flowers wasn't meant to be a book. I started writing poetry to work through the alienation and disappearance of my children, and the resurfacing of repressed childhood abuses, as I deepened my Sufi practice. I shared pieces on social media. I wasn't thinking about publishing. I was just writing.
By Request
Followers started writing to me directly. People going through divorces, estrangements, losses, saying the work was helping them get through it. When more than one person asked when my book was coming out, I had my answer. They had already decided. I just had to follow through.
Snoop Rated My Pen Game
I wrote a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle. Snoop Dogg saw it and posted it to his Instagram grid. Not a story. The grid. A lyrical GOAT like Snoop rating my pen game gave me the push I needed to stop sitting on the manuscript and finish the book.
Built From Scratch
I designed the entire book in Adobe InDesign: interior layout, typography, white space, every page. I set up a Canadian publishing house, Les Maitres Conteurs, and secured the ISBNs. I designed four covers and put them to a vote with my following. Printed through IngramSpark with distribution to over 45,000 retailers, schools, and libraries, including Barnes and Noble, BAM!, Apple, and Kobo.
The Digital Street Team
I emailed followers and recruited 30 of them into a digital street team. For a month before launch, they were posting and sharing excerpts with their own audiences. No ad spend. These were people the writing had already reached. They weren't promoting a stranger's book. They were sharing something they actually gave a damn about.
#1 on Amazon Canada
I optimized the Amazon listing before a single copy sold: keywords, description, categories. On launch day everything fired at once. Street team, email list, IngramSpark distribution. Ghost Flowers debuted as a #1 Bestseller on Amazon Canada. No publisher. No publicist. No ad budget.
